In the lead up to renowned cattle competition Beef Bonanza, students can gain confidence and ability at the Upper Hunter Youth Cattle Camp.
Event organiser Lyn Richards said it is a great chance to expand their knowledge.
St Joseph’s, Aberdeen, teacher Lisa Bright said learning primary industries or agriculture not only gives students greater ability, but important values for life as well.
She also said some pupils who were not used to the farm setting have been able to overcome fears they may have had by working with the cattle.
“They gain a huge amount of skills and one of the things we try to instil in them is respect,” she said.
“[Youth agriculture events] give them pride in their work; they have to present the animal and how they present an animal reflects on them.
“We want them to know more about the beef industry as well, to be interested in a career and to encourage them to go into the industry.”
The Cattle Camp will be at Muswellbrook Show-ground on October 9 and 10.
