The epicentre was 6.5km north-west of Camberwell, 8km below Glencore’s Ravensworth Mine, near Lemington Road.
The quake was at 9.12am Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time (AEDT).
Duty seismologist with Geoscience Australia, Marco Maldoni, said Monday’s tremor was about 30 times the strength of a smaller earthquake that occurred south of Muswellbrook two weeks ago.
The two seismic events occurred on either side of Lake Liddell about 15km apart.
“We got an email notifying us from one of the mines that they felt Monday’s tremor,” Mr Maldoni said.
“A “Felt Report” is very important from the local community because it helps pinpoint the exact location of a seismic event.”
Mr Maldoni said Geoscience Australia wants anyone who thinks they’ve felt the effects of an earthquake to go to its website and send an email.
“It adds to the scientific data recorded by our seismic sensors around Australia,” he said.
