This isn’t her first time in the job.
In high school, Miss Elphinstone and a group of her friends were the youngest committee Muswellbrook – and NSW – had seen.
The 19-year-old has since finished school and begun her degree at the University of Newcastle, which is now occupying a fair share of her time.
However, when the role of chairperson became available, she saw it as an opportunity to champion the cause of an event that is so close to her heart.
“When I was seven my best friend passed away from leukaemia,” she said of her reason for initially joining the committee.
The local teen believes the people of Muswellbrook will continue to support the event regardless of external factors.
“Even though there has been a mining downturn the community spirit is still here,” she told the Chronicle.
She said local businesses have already shown amazing support by donating raffle prizes.
Miss Elphinstone is calling on people in the community to join her in the planning to help make next year’s event the most successful yet.
There will be range of jobs available, so even if you can only commit a small amount of time it all counts towards making the event a reality.
And, of course, there is always the option of creating a team and participating in the event.
Muswellbrook Relay For Life 2015 will be on March 28 and 29 at Weeraman Oval and will incorporate Relay traditions, as well as introducing some new ideas.
