The councillor visited Muswellbrook South Public School on Wednesday afternoon to talk to Year 5 students about leadership.
Questions flowed freely as pupils quizzed their mayor on his experiences in leadership, from his school days, to life in council.
He told them of the importance of humility, honesty and listening, and what it’s like to be a leader.
“It’s very rewarding; one of the greatest things you can be called to do,” he told them.
“Anything worth doing isn’t going to be easy.
“Sometimes it’s very stressful but, generally speaking, I enjoy it because it’s so rewarding.”
The students were very grateful the mayor took time to visit them, asking him how one lands the role, and if he thought he would be mayor when he was growing up.
Students Emily Chapman said it was great to meet Cr Rush and hear his tips on leadership.
“I think the four keys [of leadership] that he told us will be very helpful for us when we run for captains, and in life,” fellow pupil Nicole Benge added.
