New faces on the committee as well as the playing roster has the Hunter Valley Group 21 club primed for a genuine shot at the first grade title, according to president Kurt Dial.
“We’ve been very happy with the results so far, although we suffered our first loss at the weekend,” he said.
“But, Scone is the premier side in Group 21 while we’re a newish outfit.
“I thought the boys could hold their heads high.
“They were in the contest for most of the match, despite the 38-24 scoreline.
“It was 22-18 at one stage; they never gave up.”
One of the reasons for the Rams’ big turnaround is the leadership being shown at the top.
Dial is joined on the executive by Kurt Stallworthy (treasurer), Heath Collins (secretary), Jonas Merrick (senior vice-president) and Marcus Bower (junior vice-president).
And, they all have a common goal.
“I’d like to see the club return to its golden days,” Dial said.
“The blokes on the committee want the same thing.
“We all boast varying degrees of experience.
“Kurt [Stallworthy], Heath, Jonas and I were all local juniors.
“Marcus came in 2012, however he’s been a big asset on and off the field.”
Dial, himself, is part of a unique piece of history with the Rams.
“My dad, Jeff, and I are the first father-son president combination,” he admitted.
“Dad was at the helm from 2000 to 2006; and I stepped into the role this year.
“It’s an honour – I love the club.
“I’ve been involved with the Rams since I was a ball boy.
“I also won first grade titles with Muswellbrook in 2002 and 2004.
“We have a lot of good young kids coming through, so I was happy to put my hand up.
“It’s important to give them [the youngsters] a club to play for – and ensure the Rams’ future.”
The Group 21 competition will enjoy a general bye this weekend, but Muswellbrook returns to action on Sunday, May 1, against Greta Branxton at Olympic Park.
The Rams tackle the Colts in all four grades, from 10.15am.
“We have a few guys with niggling injuries, so it’s come at a good time,” Dial said.
