In an entertaining fixture, the lead changed a number of times but it was Bailey Taylor’s penalty late in the game that secured the victory for the minor premiers.
Muswellbrook opened its account with a Taylor try, which went unconverted.
Scone struck back soon after when centre Brendon Norton dived over in the corner. Lachlan Walmsley landed a magnificent sideline conversion to put the side ahead 6-4.
That scoreline remained until the break.
The Thoroughbreds surged further in front when Walmsley touched down for a 10-4 lead.
But, from there, it was all Rams.
Brad Collett reduced the margin to 10-8 – and the momentum had swung in favour of Muswellbrook.
Second-rower Jayden Kennedy then powered his way through the Scone defensive line. Taylor converted for a 14-10 advantage.
The Rams were denied twice late in the second half, due to the resolute defence of a gallant Scone outfit.
However, Taylor’s penalty just minutes before full-time wrapped up the encounter.
