And, in an added bonus during the event’s 10th anniversary at Weeraman Oval at the weekend, the target of $60,000 was achieved.
The opening ceremony, which included a heartfelt address by the Face of the Muswellbrook Relay for Life Annie Hughes, kicked off proceedings on Saturday afternoon, followed by the traditional Survivors and Carers Walk.
Then, everyone joined in to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer, as well as raise money and awareness to help save more lives.
Ms Elphinstone was thrilled with the overall response.
“The Muswellbrook Relay for Life is done and dusted for another year, and a further $60,000 has been raised for the NSW Cancer Council,” she said.
“It was an exciting, emotional, tiring, challenging and fun weekend.
“The day started on a high while celebrating those we love most who are still standing with us after being affected by cancer.
“By dusk, we remembered those we had lost.
“And, then, while watching a beautiful array of fireworks, we celebrated how far we’ve come and committed ourselves to continue the fight back.
“Being a part of such a wonderful community event is a rewarding experience.
“I can never seem to put in words what Relay means to me.
“I began it for Rosie; now there are a hundred reasons why.
“This year, especially, I had the pleasure of meeting the most beautiful and inspiring individuals.”
Ms Elphinstone was warm in her admiration for all involved.
“Thank you to the residents of Muswellbrook who participated in Relay for Life,” she said.
“My gratitude also goes to the sponsors, volunteers, Cancer Council staff, food vendors, performers, MCs and the Muswellbrook committee for what you have done.
“All the hard work paid off.
“Also, a very, very big thank you to the wonderful Pausha Prigent.
“Over the past year she has provided the committee with so much support and guidance.
“I can’t wait for a day when cancer is a disease of the past.
“I’m confident we’ll get there.”
