And, on Thursday, Anthony Neate was named Muswellbrook Shire 2017 Citizen of the Year.
Mr Neate worked in the Muswellbrook community as an educator and advocate throughout his professional life, throughout his professional life and retirement.
He also was surprised to receive the title.
“I never expected it – it’s a great honour,” he said.
“We’ve been here for nearly 50 years, and have been working in the community, and raised our family here.”
Mr Neate said he had come to know so many people in the area and his life was enriched by this.
While he has been rewarded Tony has spent much of his life devoted to enriching the lives of others particularly through education and cultural appreciation.
His nominee recognised him as someone who had contributed a lot to the local community over many years, including in his work as a volunteer for a number of groups.
He has also advocated for support of aged care residents in recent years.
He fought for a new aged care facility in Muswellbrook, and for improvements at the hospital.
Karen Egan, Margaret Matthews, Penny Barton, and Micheal Rinkin were also nominated for the award.
