And, on Thursday, June 15, Muswellbrook South Public School students had the opportunity to do exactly that.
The school hosted inter-house debating rounds, with students discussing whether or not “all cars should be yellow”.
The judges chose Balmoral (negative) – coached by Miss Hill, as the winners of their debate with Gyarran (affirmative) – coached by Mr Roberts.
The second debate between Edinglassie (affirmative) – coached by Mr Morris and Mr Morrison, and Skelletar (negative) – coached by Mrs Player, with Edinglassie taking out the top spot.
Miss Stafford and Miss Smith helped organise the friendly competition, and Mrs Turvey and Mrs Moore were the adjudicators.
Balmoral and Edinglassie advanced to the final on Thursday, June 22.
As well as the debating rounds, the students also participated in an individual public speaking exercise, with a student chosen from each grade.
The winners were as follows: Brayden Dever (Year 1), Lucy O’Neile (Year 2), Bailey Chick (Year 3), Declan Dolbel (Year 4), Mackenzie Pollard (Year 5), and Elizah Legg (Year 6).
