But, rather than being cosy and warm at home, community leaders opted to meet at Upper Hunter Youth Services to spend the night in sleeping bags and swags.
The group of dedicated individuals were participating in the St Vincent de Paul Society CEO Sleepout – an annual fundraiser to lift the profile of homelessness in Australia.
More than 2.5 million Australians are living below the poverty line, and more than 105,000 Australians are experiencing homelessness.
The local event was coordinated by Upper Hunter Homeless Support, Upper Hunter Youth Services, St Vincent de Paul, and Hope City Church.
Upper Hunter Homeless Support manager Lenore Little said the event had grown in Muswellbrook since it began in 2015.
“The money stays in the local community instead of going somewhere else,” she said.
“I think the community is becoming more aware that homelessness does exist in their local community.”
The fundraiser was also supported by Muswellbrook Shire Council, Upper Hunter Shire Council, and Muswellbrook High School.
Upper Hunter Homeless Support’s Marina Lee-Warner said there were CEO Sleepout events all around Australia on June 22.
“It’s fantastic to see Muswellbrook playing it’s part and being part of a national movement,” she said.
