On the weekend, Edinglassie Rural Fire Brigade welcomed six new members to the team – just in time for the beginning of the bush fire danger period, on September 1.

New recruit Ryan Derrington said he had wanted to join the RFS for a number of years, but work commitments made it difficult.

“Then I moved up here and I had time and thought I’d give it a go,” he said.

Fellow volunteer Daniel Simone felt like it was the right thing to do and said he wanted to give a bit back to the community.

He believes what he has learned about the nature of bush fires will also be beneficial for his young family.

“We also have a rural block of land so it’s just [been good] learning about the hazards associated with bush fire,” he said.

The pair said joining the brigade was similar to what they had expected.

“I’ve been learning a lot of skills, and sort of the skills that you’ll have for life,” Mr Simone said.

”It’s really organised, there’s really good mateship here, and really good training as well,” added Mr Derrington.

They haven’t been to a fire yet, but both volunteers would recommend others join the service.

“Don’t question yourself – just do it,” Mr Simone said, adding the existing crew had shared what callouts would involve.

“[They gave] a bit of a heads up of what to expect and just finding a level of comfortability on the job.

“If you’re not comfortable with what you see, take a step back and find tasks suitable.”

Mr Derrington said members would only be given things they were able to handle.

“There is quite a bit of training but they’re really supportive,” he said.

The NSW Rural Fire Service is always welcoming new members.
