After almost nine months of rehearsals, the curtain is set to rise on the romantic comedy, High School Musical.
It tells the story of two teenagers from rival cliques – Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a shy transfer student who excels in mathematics and science.
Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, which causes division among all the school’s pupils.
“Everyone’s very excited,” said St Joseph’s teacher Telaine Kelly, one of the co-producers along with Bronwen Smith and Meagan Edwards.
“The school presents a performance every second year – and the kids pushed for High School Musical this time.
“I think they all relate to it in some way.
“And, the messages are relevant.
“It’s about resisting peer pressure and rivalry, while inspiring others not to ‘stick to the status quo’.”
Ms Kelly admitted High School Musical was a “major production”.
“We’ve been working on it since February,” she said.
“But, in saying that, it was pushed back due to the HSC.
“The Year 11 and 12 students have built the set with Mr Stevenson, while Amy Foster’s helped with the choreography.
“All up, we’ve got a cast of 80, with 12 leads.
“The four main roles went to Riley Warner (Troy Bolton), Macey Collins (Gabriella Montez), Ellie Tilse (Sharpay Evans) and Lachlan Lockhart (Ryan Evans).
“There’s also eight musicians in the band.
“It’s all about giving the kids an opportunity – and bringing the community together.”
The students’ performance opens at the school hall on Thursday, November 16 (7pm).
Shows are also scheduled for Friday, November 17 (7pm) and Saturday, November 18 (2pm and 7pm).
