Each year, the Bengalla trainees look for a project in the community that can benefit from their skills and make a difference.
“It came to my attention that the Hunter Park Family Centre provides many programs to the local community and had a vision of expanding their services after a recent donation of a neighbouring block,” Bengalla apprentice Adam Prowse said.
After consultation with Bengalla and Hunter Park Family Centre, the apprentices set about planning, resourcing and finally completing the work under the guidance of members of the Bengalla CHPP maintenance team.
“The vacant neighbouring block has now been cleared and fully turfed with the establishment of a community garden, outdoor seating areas, water supply to the gardens and lawn as well as a shaded play area installing synthetic grass,” Mr Prowse said.
“In addition, we upgraded the office facilities with storage facilities, improved IT, security cameras and external flood lighting.”
Hunter Park Family Centre coordinator Janelle Eades was delighted with the result.
“The work of the Bengalla apprentices will leave a lasting benefit for the Muswellbrook community,” she said.
“The finished project is fantastic.
“We are truly appreciative of this major undertaking and enthusiasm that the apprentices brought to this project.
“Having a major company like Bengalla Mining Company supporting our centre and the families that reside in the area is very appreciated.
“Bengalla’s commitment to HPFC shows that they care about the area and want to work with the residents to engender adhesiveness between families, services and the community.”
The project could not have been achieved without the backing of local businesses who provided equipment and services and special thanks must go to Jonesy Excavation, Downer, Coates Hire, Steve Dever Fencing and Noel Thomas Building.
“Bengalla is pleased to help Hunter Park Family Centre bring their vision to life through the apprentice community program,” Bengalla CEO Cam Halfpenny said.
“Not only does it give the centre a secure and more useable area for family and school activities, it also gives our apprentices a sense of pride in their community.”
