About 12.50pm, emergency services were called to the Barrington River at Rawdon Vale, about 40 kilometres from Gloucester.
Police have been told the woman, who had been kayaking, was walking through the water with her kayak when she was swept under by rapids.
The woman was stuck under a log for a short time before she could be freed, a police statement said on Sunday night.
Family members attempted to assist the 54-year-old woman, but she died at the scene, police said.
Police officers from Manning/Great Lakes Police District have launched an investigation into the woman’s death.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
