After a one-year hiatus, the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Relay for Life returns to the region on Saturday, May 26.
And, this time, it will take place at the Muswellbrook Showground between 10am and 10pm.
“We wanted to make it more family-orientated,” chairman Taya Elphinstone said.
“We’ll have markets, fireworks and a kids’ area featuring laser tag, jumping castles and a rock-climbing wall.
“We’ve also decided to add a couple of extra ceremonies, too, focusing on survivors and palliative care, along with the usual candlelight, opening and closing formalities.
“That will allow Relay for Life to emphasise a number of different areas – and share a lot more inspirational stories.”
Ms Elphinstone admitted there was renewed enthusiasm in the event, from the committee to the participants.
“It’s disappointing we missed hosting it in 2017,” she said.
“But, for the past decade, it’s been pretty much the same.
“So, we’ve streamlined it – and made it a day event at the showground.
“That’s a bigger area and more central.
“And, everyone is eager to come on board again.
“Already, we’ve had 102 people register.
“We also have new faces on the committee, which has added to the excitement.
“Plus, it’s nice to do something a bit different.
“That’s why we’re calling it the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Relay for Life – we want to include Aberdeen and Scone, as well as local schools in the region.”
Ms Elphinstone said they were aiming to hit the $60,000 mark.
“I’ve been involved in Relay for Life for about five years,” she told the Chronicle.
“It’s such a worthy cause – and every cent is vital.
“It not only raises awareness but gives us an opportunity to highlight all the components of the [cancer] journey.
“The Muswellbrook RSL Club and Glencore are on board as sponsors, which is fantastic.
“All the necessary information is on our Facebook page; and we’ll be providing regular updates there.
“We’re also revisiting Purple Day on Friday, May 11, so we’re hoping residents support that, too.”
The new-look executive includes Taya Elphinstone, Doreen Ayre, Joanne Murray, Taylah King, Kylie O’Connor, Sophie Scriven, Jeanette Travers, Garth Belford and Clint Ekert.
