A MAN in his 70s has died after a crash near Muswellbrook, police have confirmed.

A serious accident involving a truck and a car closed the New England Highway to traffic at Sandy Creek Road, near Muswellbrook, about 10.30am on Tuesday.
A Mazda sedan travelling north on the highway and a southbound horse transport truck collided at the scene.
Police said the driver of the sedan, a 78-year-old man, died at the scene.
The truck driver was uninjured but a horse suffered minor injury, police said.
A crime scene has been established and inquiries are ongoing.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
The highway was closed in both directions at 1pm.
Local diversions are in place between Muswellbrook and Aberdeen.
- Northbound traffic is being diverted into Aberdeen Street
- Southbound traffic is being diverted in Dartbrook Mine Access Road.
The diversion is not suitable for heavy vehicles. Heavy vehicles are being parked.
Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and avoid the area.
Due to the nature of this crash, it’s expected the highway may remain closed for some time.
