For Denman’s Doreen Ayre, the event’s “face of relay”, it was a chance to share her story with everyone at the Muswellbrook Showground.
She cut the ribbon to lead off the Survivors and Carers walk, which included members of the 18 teams registered to participate.
“It’s been 15 years since I was first diagnosed and I’ve been very lucky, touch wood,” Mrs Ayre told the Chronicle during the week.
“My father passed away at age 53 from bowel cancer but my diagnosis was still a bit of a shock.
“Because of that history the doctors were straight onto it.”
Others used the opportunity to remember those lost to cancer, as well as inspire and comfort those dealing with grief.
But, it wasn’t all sombre.
The organisers made sure there was something for everyone, from entertainment to stalls, children’s activities to a Box Car Derby workshop.
“Congratulations to the committee, led by Taya Elphinstone, for putting all this together,” Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen said.
“It’s a great day for bringing people together; and highlighting the importance of research and care for our cancer sufferers.
“It really is an insidious disease – and we must do everything in our power to prevent it.”
This year’s extravaganza, from 10am until 10pm, features the traditional opening and closing ceremonies; palliative care, survivors and candlelight services; and fireworks later in the evening.
