But, none of them appeared in the sky – they were confined to Muswellbrook’s Olympic Park on Saturday as Hunter Valley Group 21 Junior Rugby League hosted its second annual Where there’s a Will (WTAW) round.
Almost all of the young players on show, from as far as Scone to Singleton, wore the specially-designed “rainbow” socks to support the Upper Hunter not-for-profit organisation.
“We’re just thrilled that it’s happening again,” WTAW founder Pauline Carrigan said.
“More and more, it is becoming a whole Upper Hunter event.
“So, it’s wonderful it’s taking place in Muswellbrook this time.
“We don’t want people to think it will always be based at Scone.
“The day is about continuing the awareness of mental health and wellbeing.
“We want to create a little bit of familiarity around WTAW – and trying to normalise the conversation for children.”
The host club, the Rams, also retired all its number 1 jerseys for the round as a mark of respect to the late Jye Taylor.
A cake stall, rainbow-coloured hair spray, a jellybean guessing competition and WTAW merchandise tent added to the overall atmosphere.
