Don’t Be a Tosser is an initiative of the Environmental Protection Authority’s Waste Less Recycle More program, funded through the waste levy paid by local residents when they use the local waste facility and supported by Muswellbrook Shire Council.
Visits to schools and community events will reinforce key messages and dispel myths around littering, including the mistaken belief that littering is only a minor issue and it creates jobs for people employed to clean up.
One of the best ways of ensuring a litter-free waterway that the community can enjoy is to tackle the source of problem.
The litter some people drop near roadsides in this area ends up in Muscle Creek and eventually in our water supply, the Hunter River.
Council has undertaken a number of projects aimed at improving the environmental and recreational values of Muscle Creek.
Another aim of the campaign is to encourage people to report littering.
“If you see someone littering from a vehicle, you can report them and a fine of $250 for an individual and $500 for a corporation can be issued,” council’s sustainability officer Mick Brady said.
To report littering from a vehicle online you need to:
* Have actually seen the litter being thrown, or blown, from the vehicle;
* Be able to provide the vehicle registration details and the location where the littering took place;
* Report the incident within 14 days; and
* Register the first time you make a report.
Littering from a motor vehicle is covered under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997(POEO Act) (sections 145-146).
“We have been very encouraged by the support we have received so far for this campaign,” Mr Brady said.
“Special thanks to the Muswellbrook Rams rugby league clubs and Muswellbrook High School for their assistance.
“Hopefully, Muswellbrook residents will show people who continue to litter that their actions have a negative impact on the community.”
