In fact, the local author has known about the problem for a while now.
So much so, she’s spent the past three years writing a book, which was recently published.
But, unlike most publications on the subject, What Are Drugs? is aimed at the younger market – and their parents.
“I was not surprised by the findings [of the report],” Mrs Field said.
“Everywhere is a hot spot as far as I’m concerned; Muswellbrook, Dubbo, Walgett, Moree, Wagga, the list is endless.
“It’s a national disaster.
“I’ve been working in welfare for three decades, so I’ve seen a lot during that time.
“However, there is no information for kids aged five to 12.
“And, they need to be made aware of the dangers.
“Look at someone like Healthy Harold; he tells children to eat right.
“It sets a great example.
“Why can’t we provide similar messages [to them] in regards to drugs?”
Mrs Field said youngsters were, unfortunately, being exposed to substances like ice and speed at primary school.
To combat the age barrier, and provide vital information at the same time, she’s written What Are Drugs? along similar lines to much-loved lyrical whiz Dr Seuss.
“I wanted to give them knowledge without scaring them,” she explained.
“It’s educational and provides parents with a doorway to discuss a difficult topic.
“I’m hoping adults will use this as a tool to talk about the topic, especially as most are reluctant to broach the subject.
“Kids can ask questions, too.
“We teach children road safety, about bullying and other vital things.
“Yet, when it comes to drugs, we tend to shy away from it.
“If we don’t educate them at a young age, the problem only gets worse.”

“How can you put a price on saving kids?” she said.
