More than 60 people, young and old, not only improved the aesthetics of the town during a busy three-hour period, but created new colourful murals to replace the ugly eyesores around our streets.
The tag-riddled walkway behind the Osborn Bus Depot was one of the first to receive a “makeover”, according to Hunter Valley Police District Senior Constable Sheree Gray.
“Those who live nearby were very happy with the outcome,” she said.
“And, they’re hoping it stays that way.
“The kids cleaned over the graffiti – then painted a brilliant art work over the top.
“They loved it.
“Muswellbrook PCYC’s Torie Newman, who did a fantastic job on the day, will coordinate the rest of the mural.
“We’ve also contacted Muswellbrook South Public School to help over the coming weeks.
“So, it will be a space to watch – to see how it all develops.”
Senior Constable Gray admitted she was thrilled with the event.
“We had double the number of helpers this year,” she said.
“What was even more pleasing was the amount of families who participated.
“Mums and dads were painting, along with their children.
“In fact, many of them returned from 2017 because they had fun – and they told their friends.
“We also promoted Graffiti Removal Day a lot more this time around.
“It’s great to see the event growing each year.
“All up, we covered about 116 square metres of graffiti in town.
“The adage is right – many hands make light work.
“I can’t thank everyone enough, from the sponsors to the volunteers.
“The Muswellbrook Rotary Club provided a barbecue lunch, while Muswellbrook Shire Council offered free entry to the aquatic centre.
“It was a fantastic community atmosphere.”
