Now, as the festive season approaches, their members are appealing to the local community to share their Christmas giving to ensure kids in struggling families don’t miss out.
VIEW (which stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is the largest community sponsor of disadvantaged Australian students through The Smith Family and supports the work of the children’s education charity throughout the year.
In 2018, the Muswellbrook VIEW Club has hosted a range of events.
Their efforts help sponsor more than 1300 disadvantaged students, providing financial support for education essentials such as uniforms, books and excursions, personal support from a Smith Family team member and access to a range of out-of-school learning and mentoring programs.
The Smith Family’s annual Christmas Appeal needs to raise $3.8 million to continue to provide these essential learning support initiatives for more than 9000 children nationally in 2019.
Members of the local community are urged to support the appeal by donating whatever they can.
“Often we see family hardships have a flow-on effect for a child’s educational journey,” Muswellbrook Day VIEW Club president Nancy Bullard said.
“Children may not have the things they need for school such as uniforms and books.
“They may find it hard to keep up and struggle to fit in or have a sense of belonging.
“This can lead to a loss in motivation over time, underachieving and a risk of students dropping out.
“Funds raised through The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal will ensure more children have access to the education support they need to succeed at school and open up opportunities for themselves.
“Across Australia we have in excess of 15,000 VIEW members who actively fundraise and volunteer for The Smith Family.
“Many of us have seen firsthand how the charity’s long-term educational support is transforming the lives of children and setting them on a pathway out of poverty.”
The Smith Family CEO Dr Lisa O’Brien said the organisation was incredibly grateful for the support VIEW gave its Christmas Appeal to ensure these children would not miss out at school next year.
