Muswellbrook Shire Council, Ability Links and the University of Newcastle have joined forces to host a picnic and a range of activities at the Sustainability Hub.
The al fresco event is planned for Thursday, July 18, between 10am and noon, at the Wilkinson Avenue premises.
Activities will include:
* Creating your own artwork on wooden sleepers which will be used to build garden beds;
* Finding your green thumb in the garden;
* Learning about creating healthy food; and
* Eating a free delicious brunch.
Nutritionist and coordinator of the Muswellbrook Healthy & Well program Carly Hughes will share some healthy recipes that can be made from the food in the garden.
"Growing your own food is a great way to encourage kids to eat more fruit and vegetables," she said.
"And, there's nothing better than the taste of home-grown, fresh vegetables."
Council's sustainability officer Mick Brady agreed.
"We think kids and parents will enjoy the activities and the wholesome, healthy food," he added.
