MANGOOLA Coal, Muswellbrook Shire Council and the local community are joining with people across Australia this week to take part in a positive action for the environment as part of National Tree Day (NTD).
NTD in on Sunday, July 28 - and council's sustainability unit is seeking keen helpers to lend a hand.
Muswellbrook's Girl Guides will also host an event on Sunday, August 4, and the Goodstart Early Learning Centre is getting into the spirit of the event early on Thursday, July 25.
Glencore's Mangoola Coal is offering tremendous support to NTD this year by providing hundreds of plants, including 1500 assorted ground cover, bush and tree species suitable to the areas chosen for planting.
Environment and community manager Nathan Lane said rehabilitation of mined areas was a priority at Mangoola.
"Revegetation of other areas across the local region is equally important," he explained.
"We see this as a great opportunity to not only support local environmental outcomes but also support a day that brings the community together."
Muswellbrook Girl Guides, Muswellbrook and Denman Scouts, Muscle Creek Landcare and local residents have already committed to this year's National Tree Day events and there are several locations across the shire where volunteers can get involved:
Sunday, July 28 -
Muswellbrook - Karoola Park Dog Park, Semillon Street - 9am to 11am
Denman - Hyde Park, Babbington Street - 9am to 11am
Sunday, August 4 -
Girl Guides Glenalla Campsite - New England Highway, Antienne - 10am to 2pm
The plantings will continue to re-establish local native species to improve biodiversity, increase shade, capture carbon and reduce weeds.
There will be a free barbecue lunch, and volunteers are asked to wear long sleeves, shirts and pants, a hat, sunglasses, covered shoes and to bring a water bottle.
