The scheme, dubbed the ABC Passport, will be tested at Muswellbrook South Public School (MSPS) and is certificate and reward based meaning children will have to tick off objectives to receive a reward.

Muswellbrook ABC coordinator Carly Hughes explained what sort of activities will be involved, and that they will all fit into categories of acting, belonging or committing.

"Reading for example would come under 'act', but there's also some about participating in classroom activities at the school, getting involved in doing random acts of kindness or they might research some things in the community like a club or group that they could join," she said.

Senior constable Sheree Grey, who helped orchestrate the program, said they will be partaking in different events with MSPS over the coming months as part of ABC Passport.

"For the next two terms we'll be doing things with the school so we'll be having a look at the sustainability hub so they can be more aware about waste management and how they can contribute," she said.

"It's a whole community thing and we want them to see the bigger picture rather than just being home and coming to school."

The idea came to be as a result of Snr Cnt. Grey, who is on the local Healthy and Well steering committee, recognising to good work children do around the community, and wanting to encourage others to involve themselves more heavily too.

Ms Hughes said she was thrilled to be getting involved in so many programs around the area, with a 10,000 step community challenge and ABC Photovoice initiative taking place shortly.

"It's been really exciting for me to see that the Act-Belong-Commit message can be tailored to lots of different areas and that's the idea of the message," she said.

"We've had some great community support through the steering committee which has allowed us to make multiple links with different community groups and organisations."
