SOMETIMES words just aren't enough, which is why the Upper Hunter Liquor Accord now goes to extreme lengths to show young people the dangers of driving under the influence.
Imploring the help of emergency services such as Fire and Rescue NSW and Hunter Valley Police District, the organisers created a mock car crash scenario to display the horrors of an accident scene.
They spared no expense, using a damaged vehicle, fake blood and actors as they talked to students from Muswellbrook, Scone and St Joseph's Aberdeen high schools through the stress and repercussions of finding yourself in such a situation.
Making the display, which has been an annual event for three years now, confronting and realistic is crucial to their education, according to Muswellbrook Fire and Rescue NSW retained firefighter Lisa Morgan.
"It's a bit of an eye-opener as to what can actually happen, because with some kids you can talk about it all you like but until they actually see it they don't understand the consequences," she said.
"There is a lot of organisation that goes into it.
"It does take quite a bit of time but we all feel feel quite passionately about it.
"And, if it means there's one accident that we can prevent then we've done our job."
