Journey to the Heart

Be one of the first to visit the newly opened Heart Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

Previously a visit to the island was just a lovely daydream. However, Hamilton Island Air now offers a very James Bond-esque helicopter flight over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and Heart Reef, before landing on Heart Island's private pontoon helipad. From there, you'll have 90 minutes to explore the lagoon, relax on the luxurious pontoon, go for a ride in a glass-bottom boat, or swim or snorkel at your own pace.

Prices start from $1100 per person with a maximum of six guests at any one time.

Win Byron Bay getaway

One lucky winner and their guest will spend two luxurious nights at Byron at Byron resort, which has just had a $6 million refresh.

Relax in a Luxe suite which has an outdoor shower, freestanding deep-soak bath and separate living area, all nestled in sub-tropical rainforest.

You'll look your best Byron self, from tip to toe, as the prize includes some serious post-iso pampering. Staff at the resort's new Eléme Day Spa are on hand to help - two massages are included in your stay. There's a complimentary dinner at the resort's new restaurant, Forest, as well as gin tastings at Cape Byron Distillery. Enjoy a hair treatment at local salon Sulis and receive a $1000 voucher to spend at fashion boutique St. Agni. The prize can be redeemed between 1 February and 8 December 2021. Entries close 9 October 2020. Total prize is worth $3250.

Planes put up barriers

Aviation industry studies have revealed a level of passenger distrust for the measures airlines are implementing to keep fliers safe.

The passengers surveyed would prefer changes they can see, rather than assurances of high-quality air. The use of transparent plastic barriers is already underway.

Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer is leading the way in a study of reusable and disposable plastic barriers on its regional jets. Italian company Aviointeriors recently unveiled its Janus seat prototype which has the middle passenger facing the rear of the plane.

Aviointeriors has also created a basic design called Glasssafe, which involves simply installing shields on existing seats to create a barrier between passengers. Business class fliers are seeking a pod-like solution that would see them seated safely inside their own bubbles.

Get your skates on

Lace up your skates and try to stay upright at the winter wonderland on the forecourt of the Sydney International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour.

The school holiday pop-up ice rink is open until October 11, with 45-minute sessions from 10am until 8pm, starting on the hour.

For the young - or the less co-ordinated - the all-important penguin helpers are available for hire. Get one more wear out of your winter woollies and have some skate time with your friends or 'accidentally' fall into the arms of a lover. Prices start from $10 and a family package is also on offer.
